Pocono Avian Research Center, Inc.

Founded in 2000 by Darryl and Jackie Speicher, the Pocono Avian Research Center, Inc. is an extension of the Speicher's passion for the birds of the Pocono Mountains in northeast Pennsylvania.    They want to share their knowledge of birds while at the same time involve the public in meaningful scientific research.

RESEARCH
PARC is involved in many long-term research projects to further our knowledge of the breeding, wintering and migratory ecology of the native birds of the Pocono Mountain region of NE Pennsylvania.   MAPS - M onitoring A vian P roductivity and S urvivorship, and Project OWLNET are two continent wide projects to which PARC is already contributing.   In addition, PARC will be instituting several regionally specific projects to monitor population trends in this rapidly growing area of the state.   All research will be conducted in the Pocono Mountains and will be centered within Monroe County, PA.

Research projects will rely heavily upon volunteer assistance and community involvement.

PARC PARTNERS
PARC has forged partnerships with many of the regions leading environmental organizations and educational institutions. Assisting PARC fulfill its mission are the Nature Conservancy, Pocono Mountain Chapter of the National Audubon Society, the Monroe County Environmental Education Center. In addition to these groups PARC is also conducting research on privately owned lands from Skytop Lodge and Spruce Lake Retreat to several family owned parcels throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania.

There are many ways in to volunteer for the Pocono Avian Research Center, Inc.  Based upon the diversity of projects that are currently underway, there is always an opportunity for the community to become involved in any of the research and education programs that are going on.   To get involved just fill in the enclosed coupon or call the office at 570-595-8620.   We can also be reached by

EDUCATION
PARC offers educational programs for local schools, civic groups and the interested public.   These programs center around the region's native birds and their ecology.

Slideshows of the native birds of the region, and regularly scheduled walks will be offered throughout the year. These programs can be requested by anyone - no group is too small .   At the research stations, program participants will have an opportunity to study some of our native birds up close.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
PARC offers a wide array of opportunities for the community to get involved.   Individuals can help with ongoing research projects or assist with public education.   If a group or individual has its own research ideas, PARC offers technical assistance.   Volunteers with PARC will have a truly unique "hands on" experience as avian ecologists.
